Caravan Holiday Parks – the Home of Great Holidays

Self catering holidays in Ireland
Can there be any better way of getting under the skin of a foreign country than living alongside local residents? Probably not. The problem for most people however is that they don’t have the time to duck out of life for a year or so to go and live elsewhere – you can’t be a student forever! So what about those of us who have family and career responsibilities, how can we get an authentic taste of what it’s like to live in another place?
Going on holiday is of course the obvious answer, but hotels are expensive and they are all the same the world over – bland and characterless; you could be anywhere. Moreover that kind of holiday tends to be hijacked by people wanting to organise you onto tours of so-called “traditional” sites and relieve you of your hard-earned cash. And can you imagine living in hotel rooms for a few weeks with young children?
One solution is to rent a house or a series of two or three houses. That way you get more of an opportunity to experience life in that particular country first hand. You might even get the chance to be sick and have to visit the local doctor rather than see the hotel doctor. That way you get an insight into the Health Care system! (Yes, we have one).
A number of excellent companies have emerged in recent years which have helped to put Ireland on the map as far as this kind of self-catering holiday is concerned. Several reliable web sites offer houses and cottages for short term rental all over Ireland in places that can give customers a real sense of being in charge of their own time and experiences. By choosing well a foreigner can rent a house or cottage in as many different locations as he wishes, giving the chance to spend time everywhere from large cities to remote wilderness.
The company I have used about 7 times is Imagine Ireland (http://www.imagineireland.com) and is well worth a visit even if your planned visit to Ireland is no more than a pipe dream – you never can tell!
Imagine Ireland acts as an agent for private property owners and is based in England. They also have rental property in France.
Having rented cottages in counties Donegal, Mayo, Sligo and Galway I can say that the descriptions are 100% accurate, the cottages are all furnished and equipped to a very high standard, and using the site is very straightforward.
Some things need to be remembered however:
TV reception is very poor in remote areas – you can’t depend on setting the kids in from of the TV when they get bored.
It WILL rain, but that should not be seen as a serious problem – look at it as local colour!
Cafes and restaurants tend to be expensive – not a problem since you have your own kitchen and you will get to rub shoulders with ordinary Irish people in ordinary Irish shops.
Road signs don’t always point up the road that leads to your destination, but getting lost is part of the challenge and Ireland’s not that big anyway.
My favourites are the cottages in the wilds of the Gaelic speaking areas of Donegal and Galway. I know I’m not a foreigner, but I keep going back year after year, always to different cottages of course, but always with Imagine Ireland and my kids love it.

Villa in France: Perfect Family Holiday?
Article by Ashley Gilmour
When trying to find a holiday suitable for the family, compromises often have to be made. This isn’t always the case though. A holiday in the south of France could be a great destination, but forget about hotels or bed & breakfasts. Why not think about renting a villa? Holiday villas are a great solution to family holidays. There is no structure imposed upon you and your family, such as the times that you dine or the amount of noise your kids can make as they play compared to a hotel. You could visit the Provence region for a quiet holiday in a large family villa or smaller traditional countryside cottage. The beautiful landscapes could be great for family activities. If you wanted a more coastal holiday, you could look at getting a villa on the south coast in the prestigious Riviera towns of Nice, Cannes or St Tropez. These towns are renowned for their fashion, shopping and glamour.
France is easily reachable by a number of transport methods. I’d prefer to drive myself. The channel tunnel has made driving to Europe much more accessible especially if you get seasick. I prefer to drive because my kids, just like most children aren’t going to sit quietly on a train, ferry or an aeroplane. In our family car it doesn’t matter as much as we won’t have to worry about upsetting other people. Our car is a familiar surrounding for the kids so they are more likely to be at ease and eventually sleep, as I often like to Travel mainly in the evening so that the kids rest rather than incessantly ask “are we there yet”. If need be of course we could stop on the way at a hotel for a few hours if the journey is going to be too long.
Once you get to your villa it will be pretty much a home from home, the south of France has a warmer climate than ours without being ridiculously scorching most of the time. Your time will be completely in your own control once you arrive, so if you want to just relax on the patio with a beer and fire up the barbeque while the kids play or let the kids watch a movie while get over the drive you can.
Once you have settled into your villa, you can use it as a base to structure all of your trips. Having a whole villa at your disposal means you can empty your car of anything but the essentials without worrying about blocking hotel rooms. Your kids are much more likely to sleep in at a villa rather than a hotel, because there is going to be far less activity around a villa early in the morning, where in a hotel people are often walking past your room from 7am onwards.
The best benefit to me of all, when driving to or home from a villa holiday in the south of France is that when the kids inevitably forget their favourite toy or need the toilet, I wont need to worry about being late for flights, ferries or trains. That will be a holiday in itself!

Holidazed – A cynical look at American holidays
Holidazed
By Ray Galindo
Holidays are good opportunities to rest, spend time with our families, and celebrate the victories and milestones of our species. Many American holidays usually have no relevance to the heritages of many of our citizens, yet they feel obligated to participate. Now before I am perceived as an ungrateful, atheistic, unpatriotic, cynical party-pooper, let me say that I enjoy giving and receiving cards and gifts on birthdays and gift-giving holidays, Thanksgiving dinners, New Years Eve parties, fireworks, parades, and when I was a kid, trick-or-treating and Easter baskets. My new year begins on my birthday, which falls around Labor Day, and I am usually working on that day. For some, the new year begins on April 15th.
Why is Columbus Day an American holiday? He was an Italian who worked for Spain, so it should be a holiday for Italy and Spain. They are the ones who profited from his conquests. He didn’t discover anything anyway. He only made it to Puerto Rico and there were already people there when he arrived. How about a Viking Day? Here in Tampa Bay, we honor someone who didn’t even exist, a mythical Spanish crook named Jose Gaspar. Was Ponce De Leon, who had actually set foot on our soil in search of something that would benefit everyone, so mythical that we can’t give him a holiday? Botox recipients can celebrate that one!
Halloween is the time of the year when the door separating the worlds of the living and the dead is open. Instead, we are extorted by very live mischievous children who haunt the doors of the living disguised as ghouls, ghosts, devils, witches, drag queens, dominatrixes, and teen idols.
On Memorial Day and Veterans Day, we honor those brave Americans who fought and died to win and preserve our freedom. Those courageous Native Americans, who fought, died, and lost while trying to keep and preserve their ancestral lands get a month .After what they were forced to endure, they deserve an entire year!
Many Americans are not descendants of the Mayflower pilgrims, so Thanksgiving Day has nothing to do with them either. By the way, how many alleged witches did they hang? We give thanks one day a year and spend the other 363.25 complaining about something. Christmas and Easter are essentially a combination of Jewish, Christian, and Pagan holidays, and many who participate are at least one or none of the above. Valentine’s Day is a nice holiday when one is in a relationship, so it is usually a very lonely day for some. I can’t help but wonder what St. Valentine’s love life was like! These are holidays that are celebrated by retailers.
Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are wonderful holidays for those who did not grow up in abusive or dysfunctional families. How about a special holiday for orphans, abused, neglected, missing, and murdered children, unwed mothers, divorced mothers and fathers who are denied their parental rights, or parents who are sent to nursing homes and forgotten by their ungrateful children?
As Americans, it is expected of us to observe Independence Day. Many Americans are not descendants of the English colonists. Should they celebrate their independence from the British Empire? Personally, I happen to like English history, customs, accents, women, music, literature, and humour. I also like the way they spell humour, colour, and labour. Okay, so we are Americans, and it is America’s birthday, so I’ll give in to that one.
Those who are not of Irish extraction actually have no reason to to imbibe to the point of obnoxiousness and self-destruction on St. Patrick’s Day. Was St. Patrick a lush? Besides, most people look terrible in green. Oktoberfest is a German holiday that lasts sixteen days. The Japanese were also America’s enemies during World War II. Do we celebrate Sushifest? Considering what Japanese-Americans had to endure in the American internment camps; don’t they deserve a holiday as well? Anyway, they’re getting their revenge by buying New York!
Why don’t we have a holiday for columnists, reporters, authors, editors, musicians, actors, dancers, comedians, artists, teachers, students, smokers, alcoholics, drug addicts, strippers, prison inmates, law enforcement, restaurant workers, bartenders, chiropractors, poor and homeless people, communists, atheists, and Buddhists? These groups constitute a large part of the population, and they contribute to the culture and economy of our country.
Secretaries get a holiday! Puerto Ricans get one too, and they are always screaming for independence! I think we should give it to them. African-Americans and women each get an entire month, so African-American women get two in a row!
George Washington and Abraham Lincoln lost their holidays when their birthdays were combined, establishing Presidents Day. On this day, we must also celebrate and honor our least favorite presidents like Richard Nixon and George W. Bush.
What about our pets? How about a Dog Day Afternoon? Gays have a Gay- Pride Day. How about a Straight-Pride Day parade? This is worth celebrating. After all, heterosexuals make more people, and you can’t have a holiday or a parade without people! Anyway, have a super holiday!
Kids Math
Some kids find maths really challenging. There are lots of reasons for this, children have a set of natural abilities – they may be better at arts subjects or language subjects than at the sciences/ mathematics. They may even suffer from dyscalculia (numerical dyslexia). Here are our top ten tips to help your child progress with mathematics:
Practice mental maths with your child. Children can’t get too reliant on a calculator or a pencil and paper. Practice counting numbers of objects, the number of steps it takes to get to school, or calculate the result of a multiplication, division, addition or subtraction.
Play games that involve counting. Monopoly, darts, snooker for example.
Encourage your child to keep track of and save their pocket money. Work out with your child how long it will take them to be able to afford a toy.
Apply maths to your child’s activities. If your child is mad about dinosaurs, talk with them about widths, sizes, weights, time etc.
Encourage your child to play with toys that involve counting. A cash register, an abacus, a tape measure, a pack of cards etc.
Get Creative. Point out patterns and regular shapes in buildings, clouds, animals, shells, tiles. Show them how to use regular shapes to make more complicated shapes – for example draw a person using circles, squares, triangles and lines.
Time things. Use digital and analogue clocks, guess how long something will take, work out how long it is until their favourite show is on the television. How many days is it till the weekend, or the next holiday?
Cook things. Use ingredients in recipes to show your child how volumes, weights and measures work. Calculate the time to cook based on the amounts in the recipe and set the timer on a countdown.
Work out your family tree and your how your child relates to distant relatives.
Encourage your child to talk to their friends and discuss what they’ve learned and how to work things out. This will really help them to remember things.
