kids holidays

Shavuot is a great time for crafting, and it is a special holiday for the Jewish people. Shavuot commemorates God giving the Torah to the Jewish people, and this holiday is an important and sacred holiday that can be celebrated and decorated for with crafts. This article will discuss two fun and easy Shavuot craft ideas for kids.

Wheat Door Hanging

Wheat is a long held symbol of Shavuot and it is a great craft medium for kids craft projects during Shavuot. For this craft you will need a small bundle of decorative wheat, tape, ribbon, wire, glue, scissors, and some tissue paper.

Start this Shavuot craft by helping kids cut the tissue paper into circles; next help them pinch the center of the circle and tape it to create a flower. Put the flowers aside for later and gather your wheat into a bunch. Secure the wheat with the wire, and spread some of the wheat out on top to make it look full. Tie the ribbon around the bundle of wheat and glue the flowers to the door hanging as well. Create a small loop out of wire or ribbon and attach it to the back of the door hanging. This Shavuot craft is easy and fun for kids.

Coffee Filter Flower Crown

Flowers are an important symbol of Shavuot and they provide us with fun Shavuot craft project ideas for kids; try making a coffee filter flower crown with kids this Shavuot to celebrate the holiday. For this project you will need several coffee filters, watercolor paints, a paintbrush, glue, green construction paper, scissors, and tape.

To start this Shavuot craft project help kids measure a piece of paper that will fit around their heads. Help kids cut the paper into a strip about and inch and a half wide. Next allow kids to use the paints to color the coffee filters in various colors. Also make leaves out of the left over paper by help kids to cut rounded diamond shapes from the green paper. After the flowers have dried pinch them in the middle and help kids glue them to the crown. Add leaves in between the flowers using glue as well, and allow the whole crown to dry. Remember to leave a little empty space at one side of the crown to tape it shut with. Wrap the crown into a circle and tape it shut when it has dried. Kids will love to make and wear this Shavuot craft project.

Shavuot is an important holiday for kids and craft projects are a great way to get them involved in this celebration. These Shavuot crafts are easy and fun, and your kids will love them.

The Blended Family: How TO Plan Holidays

kids holidays

Simply getting through a holiday with a normal family is challenge enough. If you are working with a blended family you have even that much more of a task ahead of you. With a blended family, suddenly, your kids as well as your spouse’s kids, now, not only have two sets of parents but they have four sets of grandparents, if everyone is alive. All of these people must be attended to and visited during the holidays.

A few rules before we even begin talking about what to do;

1) Do everything together as a family. Do not separate into two different families.

2) Visit every family member in the parent / grand parent realm.

3) Include both sides children in all visits.

4) Do not show favoritism in any manner to any of the people you are visiting.

5) If you visit a special uncle on one side, pick someone special on the other side to visit.

1) TOGETHER AS A FAMILY

You are now one family, regardless of how anyone feels about it, you are one family. When it comes to visiting the other set of parents you might use a bit of judgement but I have even visited my wife’s ex at the holidays, and he has been over to our house. Generally the kids will visit the other parents alone but occassionally you may all get together. Grand parents are even a bit easier. You will know if you have specific grand parents who may be angry at your new situation and angry with your new spouse, but if none of that is present I would certainly plan on full family visits to grand parents.

2) VISIT EVERY MEMBER

Don’t visit one favorite gramma and grampa and not all the others. Granted, the visit may be more comfortable or enjoyable at the “nice” grand parents but you run the risk of making one of the children feel slighted if only one set of their “real” grand parents were visited while both of the others were.

Make sure your plans include getting your children to their other parents and the step children to their other parents. This must happen and it must happen every year. Maybe they can’t all get together on the day of the holiday but with our society, most holidays are built around weekends now. You should be able to plan a holiday visit of some kind to every parent / grand parent.

3) INCLUDE ALL CHILDREN

Whenever possible and practical, include all children in any grand parent visit. Some times you just have to make suregramma and grampa understrand that you have a new family and these are your kids just the same as your other kids are. Nothing is better for any kid than to have grand parents to visit. I never had any grand parents; I came along far too late to have that privilege. I know what I missed and to have four sets rather than two, my gosh, you have to take advantage of that.

4) NO FAVORITISM

Don’t go to any parents or grandparents more than you do to any of the others. If you are able to manage a visit directly on the day of the holiday to one of the grandparents, make certain the next year you select a different set. Mom and Dad, don’t yo0u dare insist on going to your own Mom’s every single year. Not only are your children a part of a blended family but you are as well. Everybody shares exactly the same. No favoritism.

5) SPECIAL VISITS

Should there be a special party or gathering at someone’s home for the holidays, be sure to go and take everyone. Then, it is your responsibility to try to find someone on the other side of your blended family to make a special visit to as well. Maybe it won’t be possible but you owe it to everyone to at least try. The idea is to simply pay the same amount of attention to your wife’s family as you want them to pay to yours.

I have to repeat, Don’t you dare insist on going to your parents every single year directly on the holiday. This must be shared. And, never go alone. If you insist on your Mom’s and your wife wants to go to her Dad’s because you all went to your Mom’s last year, then, guess what, you go to your wife’s Dad’s for the holiday. Put it in the plans.

One of the most dangerous traps for a blended family is for one or the other of you to start thinking your family is any more special than the family of your spouse. Both of them are special, but both of them are equal. Keep things balanced back and forth. Plan on visits for everyone. If you take special cookies to one grand parent then you will have to take them to all of them.

Karaoke Players Great For Kids – Holiday Gift Ideas

kids holidays

Karaoke Players make excellent gifts for the whole family to enjoy. But if you are planning to get a Karaoke Machine for a smaller child, there are certain considerations you should remember. You should not go out and purchase a hi-end semi-processional system for a child of 8. Neither should you get something simple, that will not function as a true Karaoke Player. You need to find the right balance between both to get the perfect Karaoke Machine.

There are some Karaoke Machines on the market, geared towards children, but when you get them home they turn out to be simple CD players. And not very good ones. There are three key points|things] you should remember when purchasing a Karaoke Player for kids. These are: Features, Portability and Playability, and of course Price.

Karaoke Features:

Most Karaoke Players are loaded with different features. Some of which will be used, others will not. Try to decide what you want from the Karaoke System and who will be using the player. For example, most Karaoke Machines come with two microphone inputs, but only one microphone is included. If duets are going to be preformed, than look for a player with two microphones or make sure you purchase another microphone separately.

Other features you can usually find in Home Karaoke Systems are built-in display screens (Black/White or Color), attached cameras, digital key control, AM/FM Radio and iPod/MP3 playback. You have to decide what features will be used and choose your Karaoke Machine accordingly.

Portability and Playability:

Karaoke Machines come in all shape and sizes. If the player will be carried around a lot, you may want to go with a smaller compact player. Or if you are buying for a small child, you do not want to get them a 3 foot pedestal Karaoke Machine where they can not see the display screen. But besides the size, the key element to a good portable player is one that can be connected to any monitor or sound system.

Make sure the Karaoke System has a least one set of Audio/Video Outputs. Most Karaoke Systems will have the basic RCA Outputs. This is the Yellow (Video), White and Red(Audio) ports. Most TVs, even the new digital/HDTVs can handle this type of connection. Not all Karaoke Systems will have these Outputs. If you want to have lyrics displayed on an external TV screen or be able to connect to a surround sound system; make sure the Karaoke System has A/V outputs.

Also, in terms of Playability, you want to know what types of media the player can handle. Will the machine be able to playback burned CDs you make yourself? Do you need to get CD+Graphic discs? (These are the CDs that can display song lyrics) Can you connect a MP3 device and be able to view onscreen lyrics? Some machines may even be equipped with built-in memory to store songs. Nothing will be worst than purchasing a Karaoke Player and finding out you have no music that is compatible.

Price:

Finally there is the price of the Karaoke System. This is usually the deciding factor to most of us when purchasing a Karaoke Machine. Pricing will vary, depending on the features and functions of the player. But do not get fooled by this. A Home Karaoke System that cost 0.00, does not mean it is better than one that cost .99. It just means that if has more features. If these features will not be used or needed, then the less expensive player will be just fine. The key is to fix a budget and then look at the different features you think will be used. You will quickly narrow down your search and find the right Karaoke Player you child will enjoy.
